Bengals Super Bowl Run Begins Now

Date: Monday January 9, 2023

After the Bengals beat the Chiefs in week 13 they took care of business beating the Browns at home 23 – 10 splitting the regular season series to 1-1. Then they headed to Tampa Bay to face Tom Brady and the Bucs where Burrow vs Brady faced off for the first time. Bengals controlled the game in the 2nd half and won 34 – 23. A few days later the Bengals had to travel to New England to face Coach Bill Belichick where the Bengals jumped out to a big lead early and won 22 – 18. The Monday night matchup Bills vs Bengals was cancelled after Bills safety Damar Hamlin got hurt. It is great to see the NFL community and fans rallied around Hamlin and supported him. I am glad he is starting to heal and get better. With this game being cancelled it knocked out a potential #1 seed the Bengals could have obtained for the playoffs. Last game of the regular season the Bengals played the Ravens at home and got the needed W 27 – 16 to spit the regular season series 1-1 and the Bengals are back-to-back AFC North Champions.

Bengals are the #3 seed in the playoffs this season. They will host the Ravens in the Wild Card round. Ravens rested some offensive players this past game including current starter and usually QB 2 Huntley as he had a sore throwing shoulder and some tendinitis. Lamar Jackson is a big question mark with his knee injury as he has not played in the last month nor has practiced. I feel Huntley is going to be the starter and Brown will be the backup. Bengals have a healthy lineup. Yes Collins is out for the season and Cappa got hurt and depending on his injury he might be out until the Super Bowl or rest of season. Burrow has confidence in the backups as people need to remember the backups are some that were the starters in last year super bowl run. To be able to plug in players that know the system and can hold their own people will see the depth Bengals have. Defense is healthy and that will be key to help the offense out so the Bengals can control the ball.

The Bengals playoff path is similar to last year. I believe they will take care of business and beat the Ravens at home. Then the matchup I have wanted to see will be the Bengals vs Bills in the divisional round. I believe the Bengals will win that as the Bills defense has people hurt and they are not playing to well. The AFC Championship game I think could be Bengals @ Chiefs or Bengals vs Chargers which the Bengals would host that game as they are the #3 seed and Chargers are the #5 seed. When the Bengals win that they head to Arizona to face the 49ers. This time around not only will the Bengals organization get that monkey off their back and beat the 49ers but Joe B and Company will get their Super Bowl win that they highly deserve !!!

On to the playoffs !! Now the real season begins!!

Bengals vs Chiefs VIII: Bengals beat Chiefs Again 27-24

Date: Wednesday December 7, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

VIII Bengals vs Chiefs was everything as expected and advertised. Chiefs had this game circled from day one as they wanted to get revenge from their 2 losses earlier this calendar year. Their first loss came to the Bengals at the end of the regular season last year in Cincinnati which cost them the #1 seed in the playoffs and the Bengals won the AFC North in that game with a playoff birth. They met again in the AFC Championship game in Kansas City where the Bengals won to go to the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs have had a sour taste all off season so coming into this game some of the Chiefs starting trash talking. One player in particular was Chiefs safety Reid. He tried to trash talk Hurst in the media but kept saying Higbee the TE of Rams. He also said Higgins was soft and then tried to say stuff about Chase. This made him look silly. As the game started Bengals took the ball. RB Perine took a run play and did a stiff arm and got about 8 yards on the play. The player he stiff armed to the ground was safety Reid. It was karma to Reid for all he had said all week. After this play I said “Welcome to the jungle Reid!!” Bengals went down the field and scored on the opening possession with a Joe Burrow QB run. His 5th running TD of the season and ties the Bengals all-time rushing TDs in a season by a Bengals QB. On the next position Higgins scored a TD from Burrow. Chase was back and got everyone hyped up. He got a taunting penalty when he went to Reid after Higgins scored and taunted him.

As the game went along Bengals stayed in good rhythm on offense and defense. The Chiefs were able to answer back and get points on the board. Each team had the lead in the game. Chiefs took the lead in the 3rd quarter with a Mahomes dive into the endzone where he fumbled but refs said ball crossed the line before he lost control.

In the fourth quarter the Bengals needed to stop the Chiefs to get the ball back and take the lead for good. On defense Pratt stripped Kelsey and forced a fumble. Bengals got the ball and scored a TD with a TD pass from Burrow to RB Evans. As the Chiefs got the ball they went down the field and at midfield the Bengals were able to sack Mahomes on a key third down play to force a very long 50+ yard field goal. Kicker Butker missed right. This gave the Bengals the ball at the Chiefs 45 yard line and 3 minutes left in the game. Unlike the last 2 games against the Chiefs where the offense went down at the end to kick game winning field goals this time the Bengals offense were able to ice the game with gaining some first downs. The biggest play to ice the game came on 3rd down and 11. If Bengals get a first down they get to kneel it. Burrow threw a perfect pass to Higgins on a slant route in the middle of the field. He had good inside leverage and made a great catch to get the first down and ice the game.

Burrow was “Joe Cool” once again. He went 25/31 for 286 yards 2 TDs and only 1 sack (came on second to last play where he didn’t like the options and went down himself. RB Perine ran 21 times for 106 yards. Burrow 11 rushes for 41 yards. Chase had 7 receptions for 97 yards, Boyd 4 receptions for 60 yards, Perine 6 receptions for 49 yards, Higgins 3 receptions for 35 yards and a TD, Wilcox 1 reception for 13 yards, Hurst 2 receptions for 12 yards, Irwin 1 reception for 12 yards, and Evans 1 reception for 8 yards 1 TD.

The Bengals defense once again had a great gameplan for the Chiefs and were able to minimize their big plays and contain Mahomes. They sacked Mahomes 2 times as well as pressuring him well to force him to throw the ball away multiple times. Kicker McPherson went 2/2 hitting key field goals in the game. This was a well balanced performance by the Bengals. The way they have been playing now is exactly how I thought they would be playing at this time of the season. Get ready for them to make a good run and a chance to be back in the Super Bowl. Once week at a time.

Bengals face Browns, Buccaneers, Patriots, Bills, and Ravens. If the Bengals take care of business and get the wins they need they have a shot at winning the #1 seed in the AFC playoff seedings. Getting wins over Bills and Ravens would give them the advantage in playoff seedings. Take care of business and beat the Browns, beat struggling Buccaneers, take care of Patriots, beat Bills at home on Monday night football, and beat Ravens to claim AFC North 2 years in a row. This would put the Bengals overall record at 13 -4 !!! I feel this can happen, If anything 11-6 but the way they are right now I think they can continue this nice win streak to end the season very strong.

Bengals Flex Muscle Over Titans

Date: Thursday December 1, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

This past Sunday the Bengals were in Nashville facing the Titans. Things looked similar between the teams except the Bengals have the revamped line, there was no Chase or Mixon. It did not matter….

The Bengals offense continued to move down the field and got rhythm with passing and running. The defense continued where it left off last year against RB Henry and QB Tannehill . Henry ran the ball 17 times for only 38 yards. Bengals forced Tannehill to throw and try to beat them. It didn’t work. Titans longest play came from a good screen pass to Henry who went 70 yards but a forced fumble occurred by Bengals CB Taylor – Britt. Ball ended up in the endzone nearest to a Titans player who jumped on it for a TD. This was their only TD of the game. Everything else were field goals. Bengals RB Perine ran 17 times for 58 yards with a TD as well as 4 receptions for 35 yards. Higgins, Boyd, Hurst, and Irwin all made great contributions throughout the game and the last TD drive in the 4th quarter was the best as all players made plays but most impactful was the Irwin catch on 3rd down that resulted in a first down. This set up the TD pass to Higgins for the go ahead score. Bengals win 20-16.

Bengals played hard nosed defense along with power running and efficient passing to control the Titans. The Bengals showed the can play power football to win besides airing it out. Remind you this was all without Chase and Mixon. Titans fall to 7-4 and Bengals climb to 7-4 and now have same record as the Ravens as they lost to Jags in a wild finish. Bengals host Chiefs this Sunday at 4:25pm !! Can Burrow and the Bengals go to 3-0 against Mahomes and Chiefs? Chase and Mixon will be baxk as well!! We will find out Sunday!

Bengals Roar in Pittsburgh in All White 37 -30

Date: Monday November 21, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

Cincinnati Bengals traveled to Pittsburgh to play in their second matchup. Week 1 seems like a lifetime ago with where the Bengals are now. Steelers are now playing their rookie QB Kenny Pickett. Bengals were in need of a divisional win as they were 0-3. Steelers were looking for a win to try to stay in the AFC North hunt.

Burrow and the Bengals knew this would be a tough game in cold weather (19 degrees). The first quarter went as expected in this matchup as both teams felt one another out. Bengals got a 10 -3 lead to end the first quarter. Steelers came out in the second quarter and mustard up 17 points with the final 3 points coming off a turnover and being able to kick a field goal as halftime ended which gave them a 20-17 lead.

In the 3rd Quarter the Bengals started to take control of the game, however there was a wild INT by Watt. His INT needs to be in the top 10 INTs of this season. As Burrow threw the ball Watt lifted his arms while falling and his left arm hit the ball and he was able to catch it while falling to the ground. Bengals outscored Steelers 10 -3 in the third. Headed into the 4th quarter the Bengals led 27 – 23. Steelers rookie WR Pickens had some nice catches. IF he stays healthy he will be a force for that team. Bengals defense began to shut down the Steelers offense and the Bengals offense began controlling the ball and draining the clock.

It was a big day for RB Perine as Mixon was unable to return for the 2nd half with a possible concussion. Perine and Mixon go a long way back as they played together in college. It is cool to see they play together in the NFL too. Perine had 3 TDs in this game. WR Irwin also got a TD which is the first of his career!! He should have had one against the Panthers but refs said his both feet were not in bounds….but the were. Glad he got a TD this time !!! Congrats to Irwin!!! Joe Burrow became a 10,000 yard passer and tied Kurt Warner for 3rd fewest games to reach 10,000 passing yards. Mahomes did it in 34 games, Herbert in 35 games and Burrow/Warner 36 games. If Burrow doesn’t hurt his knee in first season I bet he does it faster than any of them. Congrats to Burrow, Perine, and Irwin. McPherson went 3-3 on FG with 54 being his long, and 4 for 4 on extra points.

Steelers fall to 3-7. Browns lost to Bills in a close one but fall to 3-7. Ravens escaped the Panthers with a late TD and are now 7-3. Bengals win puts them at 6-4. Steelers head to Indianapolis to play Colts on Monday night football next week. Browns host Tampa Bay next week. Ravens head to Jacksonville. Bengals face the Titans in Nashville on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Bengals Rebound in Statement Game vs Panthers 42 -21

Date: Monday November 7, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

After the Halloween scare last Monday night in Cleveland the Bengals came back home and were refocused as they prepared for the Panthers.

The Bengals got the ball first and they came out hot. The Bengals had good balance between pass and run. They got a rushing TD by Mixon. The Bengals defense cam out flexing. In the first half they only gave up 1 first down and it was by a penalty. The Panthers offense never got past midfield. Burrow spread the ball around to 7 different receivers. Burrow had a QB sneak for a TD in the first half. The ground game was sound. The offensive line and Mixon were on a mission to flex the run game. Mixon had 2 more rushing TDs in the first half giving him 15 rushes for 113 yards and 3 rushing TDs. To end the first half Mixon caught a redzone pass from Burrow for a TD giving him 4 touchdowns in the first half which tied a Bengals franchise record for most touchdowns in a game. Bengals led 35 – 0 at halftime.

For the second half the Panthers decided to start Baker Mayfield. He was able to lead the Panthers down the field on their first drive for a passing TD. The Bengals offense kept the same formula with pounding the ball with Mixon and then play action passing. Mixon got a 4th rushing TD making it 5 TDs in the game!!! A franchise record for most touchdowns in a game. The NFL record is 6 in a game. The Bengals running the ball drained the clock. By end of the third quarter Burrow got to rest and bench players started coming in.

This was a great complete game in a must need win and gaining momentum going into their by week. Bengals are now 5-4. If the Ravens lose tonight to the Saints and Andy Dalton then they will be 5-4 and the Bengals will be tied for first place inn AFC North. The Bengals are in the same position they were last year at the BYE week at 5-4. People that have been banged up now have 2 weeks to heal and be ready for the second half push. For the first 4 games of the second half of the season Bengals play at Steelers; at Titans; home vs Chiefs; home vs Browns.

Now for the playoff push and road to the Super Bowl Part II

Reaper of the Night Strikes Bengals on Halloween MNF

Date: November 1, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

The Bengals traveled to Cleveland to face the Browns on Monday Night Football on Halloween. The Reaper of the Night was in the stadium as the Bengals started off with the ball and moved well down the field. The were in scoring position when the night became a long night as Burrow through a nice pass that was headed to Higgins but as the ball was thrown Myles Garrett was able to tip the pass. Higgins tried to adjust and get to the ball but it deflected an opposite way and got intercepted. Later on in the first half we were in scoring position again and Browns defense were able to come up behind Burrow as he was about to throw a deep pass and the defender dove and knocked the ball out of Burrows hands. Browns took the next possession and scored the games first touchdown then went for 2 and got up 8 – 0. Bengals get the ball back and move down the field and tried a FG that just missed. So instead of being down 8-3 at the half (or potentially being up 17 – 8 if we would have not turned ball over) Browns got the ball with 40 seconds left and good field position and made a FG as time expired to be up 11-0 at halftime.

The second half began and the Browns started out with the ball and got a TD and extra point to go up 18 – 0. Then Browns got ball again and scored a TD and extra point to go up 25 – 0. At the end of the 3rd quarter the Bengals came out of the grave and looked like they did on the first drive and the last few games. Moving the ball down the field well. As the 3rd quarter ended and 4th quarter began Burrow threw a ball to Boyd on the right side of the end zone. A linebacker was able to get a fingertip on the ball but it didn’t stop the focus of Boyd who caught it for the TD. However on the extra point try it missed just right so Bengals were down 25 – 6 but still with some life. Bengals went down the field again and Burrow made a great throw to Higgins who made a nice catch and scored on a 55 yard play and we made the extra point. That cut the lead to 25 -13.

Bengals needed a stop to have a chance with 8 minutes left in the game but the Browns were able to make some timely catches and pound the ball and scored a TD and extra point in the 4th to seal the game. The Browns get the W and it stopped a 4 game losing streak (they had close games in that 4 game stretch). The Bengals had come off huge offense performances but in this game the Browns matched up well and took advantage of turnovers and running the ball enough to control the clock then made some timely catches.

The Bengals will regroup and refocus as next game is at home vs Panthers. When the Bengals get that W they will be 5-4 going into the BYE week with having won 5 of last 7 games. This will be identical record from last year when the Bengals went into the BYE week at 5-4 and after losing 42-16 to the Browns last year right before the BYE week. Bengals play Panthers, BYE, Steelers. They get those wins it will put them at 6-4. Then is the heart of the second half where they will face Titans away, Chiefs at home, Browns at home, Tampa away, Patriots away, Bills at home, and end regular season at home vs Ravens. The season could all come down to AFC North winner to be determined in the Bengals vs Ravens game if both teams stay healthy. Both teams by then could have playoff berths guaranteed if they continue to win. The way this season is going for all teams it will come down to the last game to decide AFC North Champion with automatic playoff birth and the other team will be a Wild Card team. I still feel the Bengals will be able to get the split in AFC North games by beating the Browns, Steelers, and Ravens which would out them with 8 wins. Then the question will be between the Titans, Chiefs, Tampa, Patriots, and Bills can you get at least 3 wins of the 5 to put your team at an 11 win season. If all goes well you get 4 of the 5 wins and be 12-5 overall.

This will be a fun second half of the season and Chase will be back soon. Looks like for the Titans game. For 2 more games and 3 more weeks of rest for Chase the offense needs to attack early and take care of the ball. They can get the se next 2 wins as it will keep them at the top of the AFC North.

Ravens will be tested in the upcoming weeks as they play Saints with QB Andy Dalton (he owns the Ravens), Panthers, Jaguars, Broncos, Steelers, Browns, Falcons, Steelers, and Bengals. I think they will lose 5 of 9 games in the back half of this season. I think legit teams that can beat them because of the defenses and the style offenses Ravens will face are the Saints, Broncos, Browns, Falcons, and Bengals. Will Jackson be healthy enough to finish this season. The past few seasons he gets hurt around this time because of all the running he does. Time will tell. If they lose 5 of 9 that is every other game they will win which is the trend they are doing right now at the beginning of this season. They could end up being 9 – 8 to end the regular season. That is best case scenario for Bengals. Realistically they will probably end up 10 – 7.

Browns have a tough road now as the face the Dolphins, Bills, Tampa, Texans, Bengals, Ravens, Saints, Washington, and Steelers. I think they will lose to the Dolphins, Bills, Tampa, Bengals, Ravens, and Saints. They could beat Washington and Steelers at the end. Other question for them is Watson will be cleared to be the starter beginning the December 4th against the Texans. He will be rusty and has not played in 2 years. Teams will be going after him hard. In those last 6 games if he is the full time starter they could go 3-3 but I do not think he helps them and will lose to Bengals, Ravens, and Saints. I could see them bearing the Texans, Washington, and Steelers. Texans game will be interesting if he starts that game. I would not be surprised if Texans come out with an extra effort for this game and beat the Browns.

There is a lot of football left and as teams are getting into a groove it will be fun to see how this all unfolds.

Bengals Roar Past Falcons 35 – 17

Date: Monday October 24, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

The Atlanta Falcons arrived to the jungle yesterday with a banged up secondary on defense and with a team that is run heavy and pass off play action. The Bengals defense plays a handful of teams like this and they came prepared. The Bengals offense prepped and planned to expose the hurt secondary and attack them as much as possible. Both teams were 3-3 with both teams coming off victories last week.

Bengals won the toss and decided to get the ball first. Bengals and Burrow came out hot and got up 14 – 0 in the first quarter. To begin the second quarter the Bengals scored on the second play and went up 21 – 0. Falcons finally put together a stronger drive and got a TD. Score is now 21 – 7. Then the Bengals answered back with another TD to go up 28 – 7 with a few minutes remaining. Bengals CB Eli Apple had poor position on a deep route and gave up a 65 yard TD to make the score 28 – 14. The Falcons end up getting the ball one more time and got a FG right before halftime making the score 28 – 17.

At the half the Bengals took a breath and regrouped. Defense came out strong and shut down the Falcons. Bengals get another TD in the third quarter and go up 35 – 17 headed into the fourth quarter. The Bengals defense continued to suffocate the Falcons offense and didn’t allow a single point as the Bengals offense kept airing it out and moving the ball down the field. Bengals win 35 – 17.

Since 1970 the Bengals defense is only the 3rd team in NFL history to not give up a touchdown in the second half of their first 7 games !!! What a stat! Burrow and the offense were on fire as Joe threw for 34/42 for 481 yards and 3 TDs 0 INTs and ran 1 in for a TD. Mixon had 17 rushes for 58 yards along with 3 receptions for 33 yards for a total of 91 yards. Burrow had 7 different receivers catch the ball. Boyd had 8 receptions for 155 yards and 1 TD (he had 100 yards in the first quarter alone!!). Chase also had 8 catches for 130 yards and 2 TDs. Higgins had 5 receptions for 93 yards. It was Tight End Celebration Day in the NFL and TE Hurst had 6 receptions for 48 yards. Mixon 3 receptions for 33 yards, Wilcox 2 receptions for 14 yards and Perine 2 catches for 8 yards.

Bengals are now 4-3 along with the Ravens at 4-3 in the AFC North. Bengals travel to Cleveland for Monday night football on Halloween night next week!! Ravens travel to Tampa to play Tom and the Buccaneers on Thursday night football. Tampa is looking to get into a rhythm.

The Bengals are starting to catch fire !!!!

Bengals Win 30-26 in the Big Easy

Chase and Burrow return where they won the National Championship

Date: Tuesday October 18, 2022

Writer: Anthony Iles

The Bengals flew to New Orleans to face the Saints and QB Andy Dalton. Dalton’s record versus the Bengals since he left is 2-0. It is skewed because the first win came in Burrow’s first season when he was hurt when Dalton was a Cowboy. The second win came last season when he was a Bear but during the game in the first quarter had to leave because of a knee injury. This time around as a Saint is his first time going 4 quarters against Burrow.

The Saints had a good game plan on offense. With top WR’s out they relied more on the running game which is what this team is good at. They also used clock management to try and keep Burrow and the high octane offense off the field. This strategy has been used in the past with Peyton Manning and the Colts offense but it still did not work as planned because Manning would capitalize when it mattered to win those type games. This game with Burrow was the same.

Bengals went back and forth keeping it close as the Bengals defense clamped down tighter and tighter as the game went on. The running game was used to help the flow of the offense in this game as the passing attack was used more today for the Bengals. Mixon had 8 carries for 45 yards. 10 yards was his longest. Perine had 2 carries for 5 yards and Burrow had 4 carries for 25 yards and a TD. The passing attack dominated the Saints as Burrow went 28/37 for 300 yards 3 TDs. Burrow threw to 6 different people where Chase had 7 catches 132 yards and 2 TDs, Boyd 6 catches 66 yards, Higgins 6 catches 47 yards, Mixon 4 catches 23 yards and 1 TD, Hurst 3 catches 21 yards, and Perine 2 catches 11 yards.

In the 4th quarter with 2:09 remaining Burrow found Chase with a 12 yard pass to get a first down but instead of a first down Chase turned and got away from the first tackler and took off down the sideline for a 60 yard TD to give the Bengals the lead. The Bengals defense took over and forced Dalton to make tough throws and eventually Dalton and his offense turned the ball over after a 4th down desperation play.

Bengals are now 3-3 and at the top of the AFC North with the Ravens as they lost to the Giants on Sunday. Cincinnati is right where they need to be and starting to get in a groove. I predicted they would begin with this game to go on a nice win streak. Next up Falcons come to the jungle on Sunday at 1pm. Game will be televised on FOX.

Congrats to Burrow and Chase on helping the Bengals get the W in the place where they won the National Championship a few years ago.
