The Bengals flew to New Orleans to face the Saints and QB Andy Dalton. Dalton’s record versus the Bengals since he left is 2-0. It is skewed because the first win came in Burrow’s first season when he was hurt when Dalton was a Cowboy. The second win came last season when he was a Bear but during the game in the first quarter had to leave because of a knee injury. This time around as a Saint is his first time going 4 quarters against Burrow.
The Saints had a good game plan on offense. With top WR’s out they relied more on the running game which is what this team is good at. They also used clock management to try and keep Burrow and the high octane offense off the field. This strategy has been used in the past with Peyton Manning and the Colts offense but it still did not work as planned because Manning would capitalize when it mattered to win those type games. This game with Burrow was the same.
Bengals went back and forth keeping it close as the Bengals defense clamped down tighter and tighter as the game went on. The running game was used to help the flow of the offense in this game as the passing attack was used more today for the Bengals. Mixon had 8 carries for 45 yards. 10 yards was his longest. Perine had 2 carries for 5 yards and Burrow had 4 carries for 25 yards and a TD. The passing attack dominated the Saints as Burrow went 28/37 for 300 yards 3 TDs. Burrow threw to 6 different people where Chase had 7 catches 132 yards and 2 TDs, Boyd 6 catches 66 yards, Higgins 6 catches 47 yards, Mixon 4 catches 23 yards and 1 TD, Hurst 3 catches 21 yards, and Perine 2 catches 11 yards.
In the 4th quarter with 2:09 remaining Burrow found Chase with a 12 yard pass to get a first down but instead of a first down Chase turned and got away from the first tackler and took off down the sideline for a 60 yard TD to give the Bengals the lead. The Bengals defense took over and forced Dalton to make tough throws and eventually Dalton and his offense turned the ball over after a 4th down desperation play.
Bengals are now 3-3 and at the top of the AFC North with the Ravens as they lost to the Giants on Sunday. Cincinnati is right where they need to be and starting to get in a groove. I predicted they would begin with this game to go on a nice win streak. Next up Falcons come to the jungle on Sunday at 1pm. Game will be televised on FOX.
Congrats to Burrow and Chase on helping the Bengals get the W in the place where they won the National Championship a few years ago.
